THE UNREACHED PEOPLE'S GROUP (UPG)
The term "unreached people group" (UPG) refers to an ethnic or cultural group that has no indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize their own people without outside help. This concept is widely used in Christian missions.
PEOPLE'S GROUP Pashtuns – Pakistan and Afghanistan
The Pashtuns are a large ethnic group with a deeply ingrained cultural identity. They adhere to a code of honor known as Pashtunwali, which emphasizes values such as hospitality, respect for elders, and tribal loyalty. This code governs not only social interactions but also conflicts and even religious practices.
· Language & Traditions: Pashto, the language of the Pashtuns, is spoken in Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. Their culture is rich with oral traditions, songs, poetry, and a strong emphasis on familial loyalty.
· Social Structure: The Pashtun social structure is organized around tribes and clans. There is a strong sense of community, and leaders (called maliks) play significant roles in decision-making.
· Islamic Influence: The Pashtuns are predominantly Sunni Muslims, with a conservative interpretation of Islam. The practice of Islam is central to their identity, and many Pashtuns view their Islamic faith as intertwined with their national and cultural identity.
Challenges to Evangelism.
· Religious Conservatism and Resistance: Pashtuns are extremely conservative in their Islamic beliefs. They often view any attempt to evangelize as a threat to their identity and culture. Apostasy (leaving Islam) is seen as a serious offense in Pashtun communities, and anyone who converts to Christianity is at risk of being ostracized or even violently persecuted.
· Radical Islam and Taliban Influence: Especially in Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan, groups like the Taliban have a significant influence on the Pashtun community. The strict interpretation of Sharia law and the emphasis on militant jihad make any missionary activity extremely dangerous and difficult.
